What?
A dental implant is a titanium fixture which is surgically placed into the jaw bone to mimic the function of a tooth root. It is the closest imitation of a natural tooth because it stands on its own without impacting the nearby teeth.
Dental implants have a success rate of up to 97%; however, proper oral hygiene is crucial for the implant’s longevity. Brushing, flossing, rinsing with an antibacterial mouthwash, and regular dental check-ups are essential for a good long-term prognosis.
Who?
In most cases, individuals healthy enough to undergo a routine dental extraction can be considered for a dental implant. Healthy gums and sufficient bone are a requirement to hold the dental implant. The dentist may suggest a bone graft, if more bone is necessary.
Patients considering dental implants must be committed to good oral hygiene and regular dental visits. Heavy smokers, people suffering from uncontrolled chronic disorders – such as diabetes or heart disease – or patients who have had radiation therapy to the head/neck area need to be evaluated on an individual basis.

During the consultation
Our team of specialists works together to examine the patient and plan the case. The consult and planning stage consist of a visual and radiographic examination of the site where a dental implant is being considered.
Our prosthodontist and periodontist assess the quality and quantity of the jawbone using state-of-the-art technology: CT scans, 3D intraoral diagnostic scans, panoramic films, and digital x-rays. Once an established plan has been created, the patient will return for the procedures.

Potential risks and complications to the patient, or to the success of a dental implant is always a possibility. Cautious and diligent planning is important to ensure that a patient is healthy enough to undergo oral surgery and heal properly. As with any procedure, unforeseen complications may occur. Bleeding disorders, infections, allergies, existing medical conditions, and medications need careful review prior to proceeding with treatment.
